With the rapid development of modern printing and publishing, BIGC has experienced remarkable changes. It started from the Department of Printing in Culture Institute affiliated to the Ministry of Culture in 1958and laid the foundation of China’s higher education in printing. In 1961, Culture Institute was cancelled and its Department of Printing was merged into Central Academy of Art and Design. The Department of Printing shouldered the burden of printing talents development and cultural inheritance of Chinese civilization and continued to grow up. In 1978, BIGC was founded on the base of Central Academy of Art and Design with the permission of the State Council,. Under the leadership of China’s Press Administration, through constant expansion and connotative promotion, it grew into an undergraduate college which specialized in developing high-level professionals of printing and publishing.
With the ripening and improvement of undergraduate educational system, BIGC accumulates rich experience and gains great advantage in its characteristic higher education. Quality of talent development and social influence has been on the rise. In 1998, with the approval of the Academic Degrees Committee of State Council, BIGC acquired the conferring right of master’s degree and started the postgraduate education, till then the subject construction of BIGC entered a new phase of development. After the national adjustment of higher education institution in 2000, BIGC became a university under the joint jurisdiction of General Administration of Press and Publishing(GAPP)and Beijing Municipality, with the latter as its main supervisor, which further enhanced the ability of educational resource allocation, and service scope for profession and development capital social and economic development widened a lot.
Success of Undergraduate Course Education Level Assessment by Ministry of Education in 2006 and excellent performance in Beijing Party-building Assessment in 2007 symbolized the perfect conclusion of stage victory of BIGC school-running history. It indicates BIGC has developed into a comprehensive communication university characterized in printing and publishing, along with the coordinating discipline development in engineering, the liberal arts, management, art, and economics.
After more than fifty years’ development, BIGC has achieved remarkable educational success, and accumulates abundant experience and wisdom in school-running, and lays a solid foundation for sustainable development with its own characteristics and advantages, which offers valuable enlightenment for innovative higher education in engineering of communication.
